Douglas cause papers, [ca. 1763-1820].

Two holograph documents from the French end of the Douglas Cause investigation, and an account of the history of the Douglas family. All three documents are by unidentified authors. The first French document, beginning "Mémoire sur la plainte rendüe à la cour par André Steuart..." set out the full legal case against Lady Jane Douglas and her husband, in which they were accused of the capital case of supposition of a child. The second French document, beginning "Au sujet d'un Quidam qui aiant epousé, près d'Edinbourge en Ecosse, en l'année 1746, une fille de qualité..." is thought to be the document in which Andrew Stuart persuaded French authorities to allow priests to read a proclamation from their pulpits in July, 1763, in an attempt to find the father of the elder of the two supposed Douglas twins. Accompanied by a later holograph legal statement describing the earlier history of the Douglas family, up to the first half of the eighteenth century.
